Beyond the CEO: What Boards Can Do to Ensure Organizations have the Culture, Leadership, and Talent to Thrive
Speaker: Vince Molinaro, Managing Director, Leadership Solutions, Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions
February 22, 2012
The National Club 303 Bay Street Toronto, ON 7:30AM - 9:30AM
Mitigating risk is at the top on any corporate agenda. Economic challenges in Europe or our neighbours to the south are the backdrop to more localized concerns with financial risk, operational risk, regulatory risk, technological risk… and the list goes on. But what about “people risk?”What exactly does it encompass?
Just recently, the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Clarkson Centre for Board Effectiveness and Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions co-authored a report which revealed that there was a wide disparity on the breadth of board governance pertaining to “people” or “human capital”risk. In fact, fully 1/3 of directors do not believe boards should monitor, or provide oversight, other than CEO hiring, compensation and succession. This finding is interesting, perhaps even surprising when one considers how many organizations publically state that people are their most valuable asset.

Beyond the CEO: What Boards Can Do to Ensure Organizations have the Culture, Leadership, and Talent to Thrive
Breakfast Session - See dates and venues below
Moderated by Courtney Pratt, Chairman of Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions
The quality of an organization’s leadership and collective human capital is becoming more important in an increasing competitive and complex business environment. A recent study conducted by Knightsbridge and the Clarkson Centre for Board Effectiveness (CCBE) in partnership with the ICD found that the majority of Canadian directors believe boards should be monitoring strategic talent management areas such as culture and employee engagement, succession planning, and training and development, in addition to compensation. However, many boards don’t seem to spend the time, and/or lack the information they require from management to effectively oversee human capital beyond the CEO’s office.
Join Courtney Pratt, Chairman of Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions and an experienced corporate director, along with a panel of local directors to discuss how boards can advise and work with management to ensure the organization has the culture, leadership, and talent to thrive.
The panel will address some of the following challenges:
- How to gain alignment among board colleagues, and/or management to focus on important human capital risks beyond the CEO?
- What questions should directors ask to ensure their organization’s strategic plan sufficiently addresses all key human capital risks?
- How boards can effectively and constructively work with the CEO and management to monitor culture, leadership, and talent risks?
- What information should boards be asking for and discussing to ensure they fully understand the human capital capabilities and risks of the organization?
- Why are so many boards failing at succession planning, and what can they do about it?
- How boards can find the time to address strategic human capital issues?
